Interesting Notes on Essential Fatty Acids
Our bodies do not manufacture essential fatty acids such as linoleic acid (LA) and linolenic acid (LNA). These acids are essential for the healthy functioning of the body. Our bodies cannot do without them and we must obtain them from our food sources
LA and LNA enhance the body's ability to take in oxygen and to hold oxygen in the cells, where it acts as a barrier to viruses and bacteria. Therefore, both acids are involved in the better functioning of the immune system. Both also increase the body's metabolic rate which in turn increases fat burn-off and weight loss. LNA is particularly important in dispersing saturated fatty acids and cholesterol in the body and has been found beneficial in treating intestinal disorders such as colitis.
Two of the best sources of these two essential fatty acids are pumpkin seed oil and flax seed oil.
